Located on a farm in Mato Grosso do Sul, the Bodoquena School is a project of Bradesco Foundation, which run free schools for children of vulnerable families in different cities in Brazil. This school provides elementary to high school education and operates as a boarding school. As the students housing area needed to be renovated, a project for visual communication and wayfinding was required to complement the architecture by Rosenbaum Arquitetura. The intervention aimed, at first, to involve the users of this space in the construction process, and, thus, to create a sense of identification and appropriation between students and the new environment. Dynamics involving students, teachers and school directors explored themes of their cultural and social universe, which served as the basis for the creative work. In particular, the graphic universe of local indigenous tribes has become a strong reference for the project developed. Three main actions have been proposed: the painting of some sets of columns with different graphic patterns, the creation of tile panels for each block of housing and the application of directional signage on the ceilings of the walkways. The 24 tile panels that are distributed throughout the living area were created by illustrator Andrés Sandoval.
